A Day in the Life of a KCP Student
Hannah shares what her typical school day is like as a KCP International study abroad student in Tokyo, Japan.
The only thing that I was nervous about when I was first thinking about joining KCP was how each day would look like. I would have felt more prepared and ready to attend. So without further ado, a normal day in my life as a KCP student.
Each and every day attending KCP was filled with adventure, learning and connection with other students and people from different cultures. I approached every day with a motivation to learn or try something new while in Tokyo.
This image was taken in the KCP classroom. See Saito sensei on the far left, I’m the blonde one person over from him.
_____
8:30-10 am
I started my mornings out early to ensure that I would have enough time to make it to school, eat something, and be able to socialize with my peers.
I lived in Kasai while I was in Japan, due to this I needed to travel for about 45 minutes to make it to KCP. I lived right next to a Family Mart and would choose a quick snack. Normally I would grab onigiri and a warm drink. I would then walk to the train station enjoying the views and walking with the locals to the station.
*Quick tip: When you grab food or drink on the way to the station, make sure that you do not eat on the street as this is seen as rude*
I often would get to the station when it was rush hour. As a commuter, you need to either avoid 7:30-9 a.m. or be prepared to stand closely with other commuters.
*Quick Tip: Wear your backpack on your front to save space in the train and be respectful to others on the train*
I would make it to Shinjuku around 10 am and would walk the 5 minutes to KCP.
_____
10-1:30
Before my class, I had plenty of time to relax with the other Japanese students in the school.
On the second floor there is a lounge where there are vending machines, microwaves and tables that allow students to sit together, I would often get a quick snack from the vending machine and sit with others from my class and study. The other students at KCP were very helpful in reviewing difficult grammar and vocabulary. We all were able to bond over the difficult classwork and make plans to explore the area around Tokyo.
*Quick Tip: To some this may seem a long time to study, but at KCP you should be setting aside many hours to study the future, and review past lessons.*
_____
1:30-4:45
This is the class slot for beginner and intermediate level courses. These classes would have structured courses in which students would practice their handwriting, pronunciation, grammar, and conversation.
*Quick Tip: Make sure to study the subject before you attend class. You should be prepared to answer difficult questions and have the vocabulary and grammar almost down*
This picture was taken in Rojal restaurant. I am eating salad, Naan, tandoori chicken, chicken curry, and butter chicken curry.
_____
5:00-8:00
After finishing class, I would meet with other students and discover restaurants in the area to eat dinner together and socialize.
My favorite restaurant to go to after school was ロジャール インディアン ネパール料理店 (Rojal Indian nepali restaurant). This restaurant was very affordable, a short walk from KCP and tasted delicious.
I took this picture with my study buddy at Coffee Aristocrat Edinburgh. This is a chocolate parfait!
_____
8:00-11:00
I would normally spend the latter part of my night staying in Shinjuku and trying a new cafe each night and studying with my friends.
